AVG Secure VPN review
AVG Secure VPN might sound familiar, but that sense of familiarity is probably tied to an antivirus more than a VPN. AVG, the company behind AVG antivirus, didn&#;t start selling its VPN until after Avast acquired AVG in Avast still makes its own brand of antivirus and VPN, and both brands continue to coexist today.
AVG Secure VPN and Avast SecureLine are essentially the same service. Both companies use the same servers and both companies share the same privacy policy. Avast also owns HMA (Hide My Ass), a avg secure vpn servers VPN provider. However, HMA uses its own infrastructure.
In Januaryit was reported that the Avast Antivirus and AVG Antivirus programs were collecting user data and transferred the data to an Avast subsidiary, Jumpshot. Jumpshot would repackage and sell the data as a product.

AVG Secure VPN Summary
AVG Technologies started out as an antivirus company based in the Czech Republic. Inavg secure vpn servers, it was purchased by a rival company, Avast Software, which also provides VPN services. AVG Secure VPN is Avast SecureLine under the hood, just branded differently. Its speeds are good enough. And while its privacy policy is transparent, AVG nonetheless logs more data and supports fewer features than many of its competitors.

Pros:

Speed: Is AVG Secure VPN fast?
I performed some speed tests while connected to AVG’s servers. And AVG has clearly improved its speeds since the last time we tested the service. The speeds decreased as the servers I connected to were farther away, just as you’d expect. But they were still very good. Even with a very fast connection, you won&#;t feel much of a speed hit with AVG these days. It&#;s always nice see a provider up its game. Good stuff on speed.
Testing was done using the WireGuard protocol. Here are the average values per region:

Speed for gaming
I set up internet sharing from my Mac and was able to share my VPN connection with my PS4. Gaming performance was quite good. I was connected to a server close to my actual physical location for optimal speed. I didn&#;t run into any issues whatsoever. Had I been able to set up the VPN connection on my router and used a wired connection, it likely would have been even better. But AVG doesn&#;t support routers &#; more on that below.

As for the app’s design, it reflects the VPN service it comes from: it has very few options. And that at least makes it easy to use.

Other than that, your only other option in the app’s main window is to select a VPN server to connect to.

The Subscriptions just links back to your account page on AVG&#;s website.
The General settings page is where you can enable or disable notifications from the app, choose to display the AVG Secure VPN applet in your menu bar, and select whether to start AVG Secure VPN when you boot up your computer.
On PowerDVD 19.0.1515.62 Download, presumably because of Apple&#;s rules for AppStore distribution, avg secure vpn servers, you have the option to disable third-party analytics. This is not available in the Windows app, so I assume one simply cannot opt-out of data collection on Windows.

AVG Secure VPN doesn’t mention streaming services in its marketing very much &#; there&#;s only one mention of it, avg secure vpn servers. But the app has a category for streaming servers. There are six dedicated streaming servers and I tested them all. Avg secure vpn servers are:

All of the above locations worked with Netflix, except for the UK server.
So I would say that your odds of accessing Netflix with AVG Secure VPN are quite good. But if you want to view other Netflix libraries, you may need to look elsewhere. Still, 4 out of 5 is pretty good.
I was, however, unable to access Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, BBC iPlayer, or All4. ITVHub did work.
So streaming is a bit of a mixed bag with AVG. It’s quite good with Netflix, but not so much with other streaming services.

Does AVG allow torrenting?
AVG Secure VPN allows P2P file-sharing on a subset of its servers. These are:

- New York City, New York
- Seattle, Washington
In my experience, torrenting over AVG’s network was smooth and gave me good download speeds. I didn’t experience any issues while torrenting over AVG. Just make sure to enable the kill switch before launching your torrent client.

Does AVG support Split Tunneling?
Split tunneling, or selective routing, lets you choose where you route your traffic: through the VPN or over your ISP connection. So, you could choose to only send your P2P traffic through the VPN, while sending the rest out through your ISP connection. Or conversely, you could send all of your traffic through the VPN, except your Netflix traffic, for instance. Split tunneling is generally quite flexible and can accommodate almost any scenario.
AVG Secure VPN does support split tunneling, but only in its Android app.

Security, privacy, and logs
The Network Security page in AVG’s app lists some security-related settings. This is where you can set the VPN to auto-connect when you’re connected to the internet. Or you can also choose for the app ask you to turn on the VPN when you’re connected to the internet. Disabling both options will require you to manually connect the VPN when you want to use it.
You can also exclude private/trusted networks from this setting. I use the terms &#;private&#; and &#;trusted&#; because in the Windows app, the term &#;private&#; is used, while in the macOS app, the term &#;trusted &#; is used. AVG should streamline its apps a bit more. In any case, a private/trusted network is a network over which you don’t want to connect to the VPN. For example, someone may want the VPN to be on at a coffee shop and off when they’re at home. To do that, you would need to add your home network to the private/trusted networks list.
To add your home network as a private/trusted network, first, connect to the network you want to set as a private/trusted network. Then, from the Network Security menu, click the Edit Networks button. An overlay window is displayed with your current wi-fi network listed. Click the Add to Private/Trusted Networks button and you’re done.
If you want to be connected to the VPN everywhere except your trusted networks, you can toggle Automatically when connected to the Internet, under Turn on the VPN. Make sure you deselect Ask me to turn on the VPN when connected to the Internet, as it becomes useless.
Under that is the option to activate AVG’s VPN kill switch. A kill switch blocks all data from leaving your device in the event that the VPN unexpectedly disconnects. That, combined with the option to automatically turn on the VPN when connected to the internet, will ensure your device is never connected to the internet without the VPN.
The kill switch was disabled by default, unfortunately. I think most avg secure vpn servers would benefit from the kill switch being enabled &#; especially those interested in torrenting. It would make more sense to me to have it enabled by default, rather than the other way around.
AVG VPN privacy and logs
First, AVG Secure VPN is based in the Czech Republic, outside of the 14 Eyes nations. So that may reassure some. However, I believe a VPN&#;s logging policy is more important than jurisdiction. If your VPN provider doesn’t log and sets up no-logs infrastructure, then it will have nothing to share.
So what’s the privacy policy like?
Well, it wasn’t very good. While we can applaud AVG for transparency, its privacy policy is disappointing insofar as it essentially just lists what it collects.
But AVG has toned down its data collection. It used to collect source IP addresses and server IP addresses. It has since discontinued that practice. Good. Despite the improvement, it still collects quite a bit of data.
Under that, there’s a tiny little section in which AVG lists what it doesn’t collect.
But that still leaves a lot of info to collect. The rest of the policy simply details avg secure vpn servers AVG collects. And it collects quite a bit.

Sure, you can opt-out, but that collection is enabled by default. And again, I can appreciate AVG’s candidness, but I’d still rather it didn’t collect all that data from their “privacy” product…

In terms of the encryption used by AVG, data is protected by the tried & tested AES cipher. It’s used whether connecting with either the OpenVPN or IPsec (IKEv2) protocol. WireGuard uses a different set of ciphers, all of which are considered extremely secure. As for Mimic, your guess is as good as mine.

AVG Secure VPN uses private, no-logs DNS servers, which you&#;ll use any time you&#;re connected to the VPN. DNS data can include your web and app history&#;anywhere on the internet you&#;re device has requested data from. AVG does not let you set custom DNS servers in its apps.
Multihop servers?
Multihop servers route your traffic through a second VPN server, which adds a second layer of encryption to your traffic. Multihop or cascaded VPNs make you significantly more difficult to track and identify because of the extra hop(s).
AVG Secure VPN does not support multihop servers at this time. Multihop servers chain two or more VPN servers together, multiplying the encryption.
Server locations
I was a bit surprised to find that AVG Secure VPN doesn’t provide a VPN server list on its website. I wanted to know how many servers it had and whether they were owned or rented.
But according to AVG support, its network consists of servers in 37 countries. Avg secure vpn servers servers are owned, others are rented.
Unfortunately, other than looking inside the app, there’s no way to get information on AVG’s servers. And the app doesn’t provide much information other than the existence of the server and its location. No latency test, no status (online/offline), and no server load information, either. That’s really too bad. But it’s not hard to fix. We hope AVG fills this gap in the future.
Does AVG Secure VPN work in China?
Well, I’m not in China, so this is not something I can test directly. And, unfortunately, AVG’s website isn’t the most informative out there. So I went through the support forum to find out. From what I gathered, it appears that AVG does work in China, though not always (which is to be expected).

How good is AVG Secure VPN’s customer support?
I decided to write to AVG’s support team to gauge its customer service, and to fill in some gaps about its servers.
But there is no way for me to simply email AVG. I eventually found my way to the “Official AVG Support” page. There was no email option, but there was an option for chat and phone. I opted for the chat. I was asked for the product I was inquiring about, my name and my email address, and when I clicked “Contact Us”, I got this:
I then realized that AVG’s customer support team answers the questions posted on the community forum. So I posted my question there and got an answer very quickly. It took them less than an hour to get back to me. And they sent me an email when my post had been answered (the email also contains the answer).
I asked about the number of servers AVG has in its network and whether it owned or rented them.
AVG’s answer was courteous and helpful:

Do I recommend AVG Secure VPN?
AVG Secure VPN has gotten better with time &#; and that&#;s not given to all VPN providers out there. But I still can&#;t go all out and recommend the service for a few reasons.
There’s the data collection for Avast subsidiary, Jumpshot. That pretty much flies in the face of privacy. And despite its commitment to discontinue that practice, looking at its privacy policy tells us that AVG nonetheless collects more information on its users than other VPN providers. A good VPN client is built without incorporating third-party trackers, and AVG&#;s apps are rife with trackers.
Then there’s the feature list, which is rather small. This is a screenshot of what’s displayed on AVG Secure VPN’s website when you click “View all features” on the website’s main page:
It’s not huge in itself. And if you compare it to rival VPN providers, it’s pretty tiny.
While AVG supports tried and tested open-source VPN protocols like IKEv2, OpenVPN, and WireGuard, it also supports (and appears to favor) Avast&#;s proprietary (and closed-source) protocol, Mimic. Again, I have no explicit reason to label it as insecure, but there&#;s just no way to know with closed-source protocols. I recommend sticking with IKEv2, OpenVPN, or WireGuard.
There’s hardly any information available on AVG&#;s website. I had to rummage through a bunch of support posts to confirm that AVG runs its own in-tunnel, no-logging DNS servers. You’d think that with such an anemic feature list, AVG would be eager to put everything it avg secure vpn servers on there, but no.
And finally, while the price isn’t bad, there’s no monthly pricing. So you either have to buy a one, avg secure vpn servers, two, or three-year subscription. And that’s a big ask for a provider who gives so little in return.
On the plus side, AVG&#;s speeds are now very good. But so are Surfshark&#;s, ExpressVPN&#;s, and NordVPN&#;s. AVG does work with Netflix on four out of five of its dedicated streaming servers. That’s not bad, but avg secure vpn servers that to NordVPN and it’s not that great, either.
The big thing going for it is that it appears to work in China and AVG seems dedicated to making sure that works. So if you’re based in China, AVG may well be a good option for you. But there are others that can bypass the Great Firewall while giving you more privacy and features to boot.
I think the big problem here is not that AVG is a terrible VPN company. It’s that there are no areas in which it has an edge over the competition. So it becomes very difficult to recommend.
AVG has room to grow and it has room for improvement. Let’s see where it goes.

ExpressVPN is one of the larger players in the commercial VPN market and benefits from an excellent reputation. Its privacy and security practices are extremely good. All of the VPN servers run from volatile memory (RAM) and are booted from read-only disks. This setup essentially guarantees that no remnant data (logs) can exist on the system’s hard drives, which is great for user privacy. ExpressVPN is a avg secure vpn servers more expensive than most providers out there, but it’s fast, secure, it unblocks streaming sites, and it works in China.
Surfshark is another good provider. I’ve never seen a high-quality VPN service that costs so little. A subscription can be purchased for as little as $/month. NordVPN is a powerful all-around VPN that delivers on multiple areas.
The VPN is located in Panama, a non Eyes country, and they keep neither activity nor connection logs.

It seems that from the moment you commit to purchase AVG Secure VPN, that where everything starts to go wrong. After pulling us through to the payment page, we find that AVG only offers payment for their software with a credit card or PayPal. Now while that suits us fine, we imagine that international customers would like to see alternative payment options like WorldPay, AliPay or Cryptocurrency.
Also, when we contacted one of our friends in Africa, they said that they only had the option to pay with a credit card, and PayPal was not available.

AVG Secure VPN claim that they have a &#;no-logs&#; policy. This statement means that they do not record what you do online with their VPN product. This policy is a key criterion for a VPN, and many users trust their service provider to keep their activities private and secure.
However, AVG does mention that if they receive reports of abuse, they will investigate the claim. The company also claims that they do not allow their customers to use the VPN service to share or distribute pirated content. This clause is pretty standard for the course, but we don&#;t see this type of language in the terms and conditions of many other VPN providers.
What caught our attention was when we read through the privacy policy for all AVG products, including the VPN service.
It turns out that AVG is collecting a substantial amount of data on its users, and storing them in their servers. Email addresses, phone numbers, SIM card numbers, location data, and your I.P. address are a few examples of the account data accessed by AVG, which can identify you online.
AVG state that they also have the right to share your data with interested third parties, and this includes handing over your session logs to law enforcement if they subpoena the company.
We can&#;t accept these terms of service, and we find it appalling that AVG would promote their product without clearly informing their customers of these terms. Essentially, there is very little protection on offer from the company, and they will hang you out to dry if the Eyes demand it to be so.
AVG is part of the Avast Group, with headquarters in Amsterdam. Their senior management comprises of U.S. citizens, and we don&#;t see any reason for them to avoid requests from the Eyes.
User-Interface
We enjoy using apps with clean interfaces – there&#;s nothing worse than opening an app to a cluttered dashboard; that&#;s why we appreciate apps with clean interfaces. However, saying that AVG Secure VPN has a clean c-panel would be an understatement.
The AVG Secure VPN dash has very few features. The only data available on the main screen is your server location and connection status. Call us picky – but we would like to see other features like our current I.P. address and connection speed.
Considering the bare-bones nature of the main screen, we are surprised to see that it takes up so much space when we open the desktop client. The main screen gives you access to the list of server locations by clicking the &#;change location&#; button, which opens the server list in a separate window.
We enjoyed the look and feel of the server lists, as AVG have all of their locations listed by continent, making it easy to select your ideal server location. We would have preferred it if the software allowed us to save our favorite server locations.
Clicking the gear icon in the top right-hand corner takes you through to the settings menu. These settings are very basic, with options for automatic startup, as well as an option to turn on Wi-Fi security. We didn&#;t find any configurable settings, giving the VPN a very out-of-the-box feel, and we would have liked to see more customizable configurations for the software.
Connection and Speed
AVG state that the connection speeds for their VPN have significantly improved as they expand their server network. When connecting to local U.S. servers, we experienced rates between 45 to Mbps, which is more than adequate for streaming and fast download times.
Connecting to the United States servers from the U.K. was a bit slower, but still offered satisfactory speeds of Mbps. The further we get into mainland Europe, the lower the speed tests. Fortunately, connection speeds to Australia were faster than most competitors, with average rates clocking in at Mbps.
We found that uploads were not as consistent as downloads, but that par for the course with most VPN providers. However, slow upload may deter people who are frequent users of P2P services.
While speed was excellent, we found the latency to be unacceptably high. Even when connecting to servers in the same city as our geographic location, we found ping time to measure in at ms, which is a terrible performance.
These latency issues mean that many gamers will have problems playing live, and may want to consider another VPN service. Our research into other VPNs shows average latency times of 2-ms for local connections, making AVG one of the worst providers available.
Security and Encryption
When it comes to rating the security and encryption of AVG Secure VPN, we also found it lacking in some departments. The Wi-Fi protection offers adequate countermeasures to avoid public hacks in open Wi-Fi spots, but users with privacy concerns may want to look into other software if they use open networks frequently.
Both the Windows client and Android app, we tested use OpenVPN protocol, with no option to switch to other protocols in the settings. We found this frustrating, as AVG does not mention this in their sales material, and we needed to use the support chat to discover this fact.
The encryption uses the industry standard bit model, which is a military-grade encryption level offering the highest level of security to users. Our biggest gripe with AVG Secure VPN is that they don&#;t provide an internet kill switch with the software.
Should your connection fail, then the program will expose your real I.P. address – this is an unacceptable feature to leave out of the package, especially when we consider the subscription price being in the premium segment of the market.
Our DNS leak tests gave us no issues, and we pleased to find that the connection remained stable for most of our session, without any drops.
Netflix Blocked for Most Locations
One of the favorite uses of a VPN is the fact that it can get around geoblocks preventing you from watching certain content online. By routing your connection through a VPN, you can connect to services like the U.S. version of Netflix.
While most VPN providers have dedicated Netflix servers for streaming, it&#;s clear that AVG does not think this feature is worth adding to its service. When we tried to watch the U.S. version of Netflix, we found that more than half of the server locations we tried did not gain access to the site.
We did eventually establish a connection using the North American services, but their dedicated streaming servers proved to be worthless in our testing.
Limited Torrenting and P2P Locations
Downloading Torrent files is also one of the most frequently cited reasons for using a VPN service. Once again, AVG falls short in this department. We tested Torrenting on their dedicated P2P servers and found results to be less than impressive.
At the moment, AVG allows Torrenting through the following dedicated servers.
- London.
- Paris.
- Prague.
- Frankfurt.
- Amsterdam.
- Brazil.
- Seattle.
- Miami.
- New York.
However, while the Windows client lists Brazil as an active P2P server, we find that it does not show up on the Android app as a valid P2P location.
The limited choice available may turn off those P2P users that rely on faster upload times. Fortunately, AVG does not limit bandwidth to these servers, so you have no limits on file size or restrictions on session bandwidth consumption.
User-Friendly App
We downloaded the Android app for our smartphone to test the mobile functionality of the program. As a note, the app is also available for all iOS devices as well. Similar to the desktop client, the app has a day trial period with the same terms and conditions as the desktop client.
After downloading and installing the app, we opened the interface to find a clean, user-friendly control panel – with hardly any features. Like the desktop client, the mobile app is extremely sparse in terms of features and functionality.
The app automatically chooses the server that&#;s offering the best speeds, and the optimized server can vary depending on your location. This type of functionality is similar to what we see with other VPN apps, so it&#;s nothing to get us excited.
By clicking the &#;change location&#; button, you gain access to the server list and can make your choice manually. You also have the option to choose dedicated servers in the mobile app. Overall, the app is user-friendly, but we think that&#;s because it is so featureless that there is nothing to include in the control panel.
Navigating the settings is easy, but once again, there is no option to customize your settings configuration.
AVG Secure VPN Server Locations
AVG may advertise an extensive server network, but when we take a look at what&#;s on offer, it tells a different story. There are limited server locations, especially outside of the United States, with AVG hosting servers in cities across countries.
Seven of the locations reside in the Us, with servers in New York, Chicago, Miami, Dallas, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, and Seattle. Montreal and Toronto house the company&#;s Canadian servers.
Europe has the next most extensive concentration of servers, with locations in London, Frankfurt, Madrid, Helsinki, Paris, Milan, Stockholm, Amsterdam, Russia, Warsaw, and the Czech Republic.
International locations include Johannesburg in South Africa, Australia, Tokyo, and Singapore, along with servers in Turkey. South America has server locations in Mexico City and Sao Paolo, Brazil.
The list is not impressive, and we found that speeds outside of the US, Canada, and Europe, to be relatively weak compared to other VPN providers.
Customer Support
AVG doesn&#;t give a hoot about customer service from our experience with the company. The website has limited information on their products, and the email support took hours to get back to us with a simple query.
Almost every other VPN provider offers a live chat, and when we have issues, it&#;s the first place we go to for support. AVG does not provide this service –which is very disappointing.

Wrapping Up – The Verdict
If you&#;re looking to buy an over-priced VPN that may or may not track your movements on the internet, then AVG is the ideal product for you. However, if you have serious concerns over your privacy, you&#;re a gamer, or you enjoy downloading and uploading P2P, then AVG is a poor choice.
Considering the cost of this software, and the functionality – AVG leaves a lot to be desired from its offering. While the basic functionality of the VPN is adequate, the costs are not great, and we feel you would be better off going with another VPN provider, like ExpressVPN or NordVPN.
Taking a brief overlook of the pros and cons of this software, we find;

However, after spending a few days using the VPN, we find it to be lacking in several notable features, the performance is nothing worth shouting about and their privacy / no-log policy is very poor.

AVG Secure VPN has a small network of servers in 37 countries. This includes 28 in Europe, 20 in North America, 7 in the Asia Pacific, and 1 in Africa and South America. I expected AVG to do better than this, especially with its recognition in the software industry.

AVG Secure VPN offers servers that are optimized for streaming in Gotham City, Seattle, Miami, New York, Frankfurt, and UK Wonderland. Also, they have optimized P2P servers in France, Germany, the Netherlands, the UK, and the USA. All of these locations have been clearly labeled in client applications so you can quickly find them.
With only a handful of servers to choose from, it’s no surprise that AVG Secure VPN couldn’t unblock many popular streaming services. A larger server network minimizes the risk of server overload and maintains stable download and upload speeds. For this reason, a VPN with a large number of servers is an ideal choice. For example, Cyberghost has an extensive global server network with + servers in 91+ countries, so you don’t need to worry about overcrowded servers.
AVG Secure VPN is a dependable VPN service that gives users a high level of security. For the security protocol, AVG Secure VPN uses L2TP/IPSec for Mac, IKEv2/IPSec for iOS, and OpenVPN over UDP for Windows and Android. In addition, the Mimic protocol is available for Mac, Windows, Android, and iOS devices. Avast’s Mimic protocol is a proprietary technology that is exclusive to AVG Secure VPN and Avast Secureline. As a further measure of security, AVG Secure VPN uses the AES bit data encryption system. It is a top-notch encryption system that is used by governments and military agencies all over the world. Along with that, it uses Open SSL and certificate authentication to protect its users.
Another exciting feature of AVG VPN is its built-in mechanisms that prevent all IP, DNS, and WebRTC leaks. As a test, I ran the VPN on three separate leak detection websites and did not detect any leaks at all.

Connections to VPN servers can sometimes fail, exposing your true identity. As a preventative measure, AVG Secure VPN incorporates an automatic kill switch. It is a newly implemented feature and as of right now is only available on Windows and macOS. If you lose connectivity to a VPN server for any reason, the kill switch will instantly cut off all internet connections. When you download the VPN app, the kill switch is deactivated by default but can be activated from the network security settings.

Additionally, AVG Secure owns all its servers and doesn’t use any virtual servers. This means a third party (the server provider) cannot install a backdoor on the servers to leak users’ information. Sadly, the VPN lacks a split tunneling feature on the desktop client that allows you to select which apps the internet traffic is excluded from the VPN tunnel.
AVG Secure VPN promises a mostly anonymous experience for its customers, but its privacy policy is complex and confusing. According to its privacy statement, it keeps track of connection timestamps, bandwidth usage, IP addresses of servers connected to, and partial IP addresses of subnets. The data that is collected by AVG is stored for 30 days before it is deleted. The company considers the data crucial to maintaining the functionality of some of its applications.
AVG Secure collects and stores anonymous data but only for improving its function
The transparency of AVG’s privacy policy is appreciated, but I find it somewhat intrusive. Even though the stored data can’t be traced back to the user, the company can certainly do without that data.
A clause in the AVG agreement permits the company to divulge information to other members of the Avast group. With its headquarters in the Czech Republic, AVG is governed by EU data retention laws and data-sharing agreements with other countries. Consequently, AVG will share your data with third parties upon receiving a subpoena or when required by the government or a court of law. However, they make it clear that IP addresses of servers cannot be used to identify users or any information regarding the applications or services they use. Please note that AVG may extend data retention periods if required by law or to comply with court orders.
Despite maintaining a warrant canary — an assurance that the VPN hasn’t built a backdoor to leak encrypted information from its servers, I noticed that its transparency report is significantly outdated.

Good VPN, annoying prompt to add to trusted network
So far I am happy with the VPN in terms of stability and speed. However I believe some recent update started making the app prompt me whenever I want to disable VPN which is quite annoying. There is a reason why people may toggle it on and off, so there is no reason why I am forced to add a network to trusted just because I would like to disable it. Worst part is I cannot close the pop up until I choose to ignore which leaves the VPN on, or forced to add to trusted to off the VPN.
